Notes on The James Holmes Conspiracy

THE JAMES HOLMES
CONSPIRACY

Type of documentary
Expository

Mise-en-scene
There is no original footage within the documentary, so this category cannot be considered.

Camera
Once again there is no original footage within the documentary, so this category cannot be considered.

Sound
Straight away the documentary starts with very intense, fast music. It is the theme music of the Batman films. After the initial introduction there is little music, the entire documentary is built up of interviews and news reports.

Archive material
Footage from the police helicopter and handheld footage from witnesses is used, as well as footage from various Batman films, including The Dark Knight Rises. Instead of a narrator the documentary starts by playing police recordings to accompany the videos on screen. It is not until later on the narrator is heard for the first time. There is no original footage in the documentary, it is 100% archive footage sourced from various different areas.

Graphics
The documentary begins with a quote from Albert Einstein. Throughout the documentary simple white text appears at the bottom of the screen. These graphics at the bottom of the screen often contradict what’s being said, for example whilst a recording of a police conversation is being played, the white text at the bottom of the screen either argues against what’s being said, or completely contradicts it.
