Notes on Loose change

LOOSE CHANGE

Type of documentary
Expository: The narrator talks over the documentary giving you pure facts.

Themes
Factual information regarding the events of 9/11. It’s purpose is to ‘expose’ government cover-ups, or at least cause people to question the official story.

Structure/narrative
The narrative in the documentary is the ‘voice of god’ in other words. It’s very affirmative and has a point to make. It talks to the viewer directly e.g ‘Are you convinced yet?’

Mise-en-scene
Of the few original interviews in the documentary one worth noting is the plane instructor. It looks as though they did not consider the mise-en-scene at all for this interview, he is simply placed in front of a busy office with nothing of relevance in the background.

Editing
The documentary is fast paced and uses quick editing. During interviews the interviewee is positioned to follow the rule of thirds, it also uses jump shots for the interview.

Sound
The documentary uses a lot of different sound beds, they’re mainly simple electronic beats and play both during archive footage material or when the narrator is talking, however they do not play during interviews.

Archive material
Most of the documentary is built up from Archive footage; there is very little original content. The archive footage used is either that of home recordings of the world trade centres after being struck, or news reports showing the pentagon, flight 93 and the world trade centres.

Graphics
During the first interview with the pilot instructor no graphics are used to show his name or his job, instead he is introduced by the narrator.
